Land Rover 2008 . . .
The LR2 is Land Rover's all-new compact 5-seat SUV that joined the lineup early in 2007 as a 2008 model, taking the place of the Freelander.
The LR2 has new architecture designed to deliver a good balance between handling and ride comfort on the road while retaining Land Rover’s legendary off-road capability.
Equipped with permanent intelligent all-wheel drive, the LR2 utilizes an electronically controlled center differential to vary the torque split between the front and rear axles as needed.
The LR2 features Terrain Response, which first debuted on the LR3, and the first use of Roll Stability Control in a Land Rover.
Powering this newest Land Rover is a transversely mounted 230-horsepower 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine teamed with a six-speed automatic transmission.
Land Rover started in 1948
The first production Land Rover was built in England and introduced in 1948 at the Amsterdam Auto Show.
In 1986 Range Rover of North America was established in Maryland, with the first U.S.-specification models hitting the market the following year.
In 1992 the name was changed to Land Rover North America.
After being purchased by the BMW Group in 1994, Land Rover was sold to Ford Motor Company in 2000 and became part of their Premier Automotive Group, which includes Aston Martin, Jaguar and Volvo.

Making its debut at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, the Land Rover LR2 is an all-new premium compact SUV and is the fourth new model from Land Rover in just four years.
Featuring a dynamic design, purposeful stance, spacious interior and a number of technological features, the LR2 adds a new dimension to the compact SUV segment.
All new from the ground up, the “LR2 combines the advantages of a premium sedan—such as polished ride, accomplished performance and an attractive cabin—with the attributes of a robust SUV," said Richard Beattie, executive vice president, marketing and sales, Land Rover North America.
Fit for serious off-roading, the LR2’s body is a five-door monocoque structure with a high level of torsional rigidity which benefits refinement, comfort and handling.
The suspension is fully independent and uses the most modern stability control systems, including Roll Stability Control, a sophisticated technology that helps mitigate the risk of roll-over even in extreme conditions.
"We purposely kept strong Land Rover design cues, such as the clamshell bonnet, stepped roof and the basic form," says Land Rover design director Geoff Upex. "The overall look is new and contemporary.
The design is chiseled, geometric and simple – it looks like it's hewn from the solid. We have kept a close design relationship with the LR3 and Range Rover Sport, but interpreted the design language to suit the requirements of customers for a more compact SUV."
Inside the premium compact SUV is spacious head, shoulder and legroom in both the front and rear.
“Stadium seating” is featured for rear passengers where occupants sit slightly higher than the front for a clearer view.
Cargo space is among the best in class at 58.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folder and 26.7 cubic feet with the rear seats up.
“With its tough go-anywhere ability, stadium seating, cabin versatility and spaciousness, we believe that no other compact SUV gets closer to blending these best-of-both-worlds abilities,” said Beattie.
Powering the LR2 is a brand-new 230-horsepower 3.2-liter inline six-engine that can go zero to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds.
The engine is matched to a new six-speed automatic transmission with Land Rover’s CommandShift offering manual sequential gear changes when required. A driver-selectable sport mode is also available for a more lively performance.
Packed with a host of new technological features, the LR2 is equipped with a standard Terrain Response for better off-roading, new permanent intelligent all-wheel-drive system and the patented Gradient Release Control, which improves control when releasing the brakes on steep and slippery slopes.
Other features and options include keyless starter button, bi-xenon headlights, adaptive front lighting, rain-sensing windshield wipers, rear park distance control, standard two-part panoramic sunroof and air conditioning and a full-color touch-screen DVD satellite navigation system is optional.
The Premium Audio System offered features Dolby Pro Logic II 7.1 Surround Sound.
Complete with 14 speakers, including a subwoofer, the system is played through an in-dash six-disc CD changer. An auxiliary audio connection (for MP3 players) is also standard.
The Land Rover LR2 is designed and engineered by Land Rover at Gaydon, near Warwick, England, and is built at the Halewood plant in Liverpool.
The sport-utility vehicle (SUV) category continues to be one of the most popular segments in the industry, making up more than 26 percent of the market in 2005, according to research done by J.D. Power and Associates.
However, the market for more fuel-efficient crossover-utility vehicles (CUV) makes up an increasingly larger portion of total SUV sales.
